Ontario Investing over $740,000 to Protect More Firefighters in Ottawa

December 15, 2025

Funding will help fire services in Ottawa to expand cancer
prevention initiatives and improve safety for lithium-ion battery related emergencies

OTTAWA – As part of its plan to protect Ontario and keep communities safe, the Ontario
government is protecting firefighters in Ottawa by investing over $740,000 through the Fire Protection Grant. The funding will help municipal fire departments expand cancer prevention initiatives and improve emergency response to lithium-ion battery related incidents.

The Ottawa Fire Service will be receiving $740,025 through the Fire Protection Grant to support important initiatives that will protect the men and women who put their lives on the line each day to protect our community, responding to a variety of calls that require courage and fearlessness to ensure that we are protect in the face of an emergency.

This funding will support eligible projects including:
– Equipment, supplies and personal protective equipment that enhance cancer
prevention initiatives
– Equipment and supplies for lithium-ion battery incident response

“I’m proud that this Fire Protection Grant is delivering critical funding to Ottawa Fire Services so that firefighters have the tools they need to protect themselves and our community,” said George Darouze, MPP for Carleton. “This investment will help enhance cancer prevention measures and give crews specialized equipment to safely and effectively respond to lithium-ion battery fires — because those who run toward danger should go home safe at the end of every shift.”

“Firefighters are always there when we need them, running towards danger to protect our
homes and our communities,” said Solicitor General Michael Kerzner. “That is why we’re
doubling this year’s Fire Protection Grant, giving even more firefighters across the province the
tools they need to stay safe and effectively respond to life threatening emergencies.”

This year’s Fire Protection Grant will support all 380 municipal fire services in Ontario, helping
the approximately 33,000 firefighters who protect Ontario and keep our communities safe.
